Come On In - The Water's Fine!

On Thursday, June 30, 2005 at 11:00 a.m., an exciting event took place at Woodbine Beach, beside the Woodbine Bathing Station. That's when North America's first Blue Flag flew over Toronto. Councillor and Deputy Mayor Sandra Bussin joined members of Environmental Defence as the Blue Flag was raised for the first time on this continent. And now Kew-Balmy Beach also has the Blue Flag designation!

The Blue Flag is a major distinction for Toronto. As one of the world's most respected environmental benchmarks, it applies strict criteria that measure water quality and environmental management of waterfronts around the world. It's an exclusive designation, awarded to beaches and marinas in 33 countries across Europe, South Africa, the Caribbean - and now Canada.

Every Beacher should be very proud that our beaches have been chosen to fly the Blue Flag. It's only awarded to communities who can demonstrate that the water at their beaches is consistently safe and clean, and that the management of their waterfront assets meets the highest standards.
